The Heart Or Brain?

Trick question..

Had a discussion with dad and he got me into this confusing state.. Which is the king of our body? Brain or the heart? Almost everyone would say the brain, but how can the brain be the king? Coz if the heart doesn't work neither will the brain but if its the other way around, like if the brain doesn't work, the heart still does, right? Like people can survive with the life support thing..

Other thing is, your heart is just a muscle that has to pump blood around, it has nothing to do with your feelings etc, then why do people say stuff like, "dil kharab ho raha hai", "he/she broke my heart", "kuch khane ko dil nahi kr raha", etc.. Its not just a number of people who say this, these phrases are used all around the world. There might be a reason why the first person, to say something like this, would have said it.

According to what we study, all these feelings have nothing to do with the heart.. You get my point right?

Instead of saying, "you broke my heart" why cant we say "you broke my brain", instead of "dil kharab ho raha hai"  why not "dimagh kharab ho raha hai"? I know it sounds crazy but think about it..

  1. I think the reason behind this is more physical than biological.
True enough, the heart can't 'feel'.
But although sudden changes in feelings affect both the brqin and the heart, the heart causes a change in pulse and blood pressure, whereas the brain gives no such physical indication of it actually 'feeling'.
You know, when people say their 'heart just sank', it was a physical change that indicated a change in feeling.
This is what relates to why we have begun to consider the heart a true reflector of feelings. :)
Then again, that is my point of view.

  4. Well technically speaking, the brain does control your heart. That is why our death is when the brain dies, not the heart, that is why they can transfer a heart but not the brain...

The heart needs a constant supply of pulses from the brain... while we cannot control these, this is exactly why in times of great emotion or danger or such our heart pulses a lot harder without any physical reason... because it goes into fight or flight mode!

  5. The heart is not just a muscle. It's where the soul meets the spirit.

science is stupid. It relies only on the 5 senses. there are infinite more to be explored as humans.

The question you've asked is of consciousness... and i don't think it has anything to do with the brain. It's in the spirit, and since it's connected through the heart to our souls, it sends us messages of approval and disapproval, pain and pleasure, despair and enlightenment through the heart.

Let's not be zombies to what television and the world today teaches us. When usually we speak of the heart, we are actually speaking of the spirit. Hence, "Dil kharab", "Dil baitha jaa raha hai", "dil uss ko de dya", all refer to the condition of the spirit communicating through the heart.

The brain is just a tool that processes stuff. It's not our consciousness. It's not where "we" exist within our body.
